It's not so hard as supose to be. You saw mine, it was my first attempt in crossbows ever. Here is very helpful thread about trigger mechanisms which I started building from. [link] <-- I chose that in #4 post and modified it a little.

is that based off of some sort of common design? i feel like i've seen that design before... it looks almost Da Vinci-esque, but i'm pretty sure he never made a crossbow like that :P

Maybe something like this has been seen in Arcanum, on the second thought. Don't exactly remember what crossbobws from the game did look like - if there were any at all...

No, to be honest, no prototypes were used. Just a piece of imagination with a coat hanger stuck into it :)
